Much of your time in a drug and alcohol addiction treatment program is taken up with required activities. These include individual counseling, therapy support groups, lectures, and other activities that are scheduled with your long-term benefit in mind.
However, you will also have a decent amount of time to spend as you wish. Make it a point to use this free time in ways that will benefit you, as well.Having too much time without planned activities often creates problems for individuals who suffer from substance abuse. In a rehab center, this is when major rules about having intimate relationships and trying to smuggle in substances are often broken. Free time causes your mind to wander, often back to using drugs and alcohol. This is probably one of the many things that helped contribute to your addiction. You can prevent this from happening by using your free time wisely. Doing so while in a drug rehab program will help you to develop healthy habits that promote abstinence for the period after you leave the treatment center, when there will be more temptation to use. You have to learn how to take the initiative to create structure in your life in order to be successful.
Make the most of your time in a rehab program by doing things that are beneficial to your overall recovery. This includes having fun and relaxing, but in a healthy manner. Stress reduction is always good for preventing relapse. Consider using this time to learn something that you have always been interested in. Begin creating a lasting bond with another person, or work on repairing your relationships with family and friends if they visit. Take advantage of every opportunity for change that you are given in an addiction treatment center. It will make the process that much easier after you leave.
